Each journey follows a different route through the Tien Shan mountains.
In Sary-Chelek, we ride through walnut forests, alpine pastures and along a chain of high mountain lakes, crossing remote passes.
In the At-Bashi region, the landscape opens into wide foothills and high plains used for grazing. We ride past large flocks of sheep, horses and cattle, and meet shepherds moving between pastures.
The camps
Camps are set up each day ahead of arrival, with luxury camp beds and hot water. Tables and chairs are laid in a mess tent with Uzbek crockery, tablecloths and hurricane lamps.
Everything is carried with us, which allows us to move camp each day and travel deeper into the mountains.
Our cooks travel with us, preparing two-course suppers and baking cakes, even in the most remote locations.
Kyrgyzstan
Beyond its cities, Kyrgyzstan remains largely unchanged, with life still shaped by the movement of animals across the mountains.
Herds of horses, sheep and cattle are moved between grazing grounds, and families live in yurts in the high pastures, often far from roads or settlements.
The people
Alexandra Tolstoy has worked with the same Kyrgyz horsemen and their families for over 25 years.
The journeys are led by them, drawing on a deep knowledge of the mountains and the routes that run through them.
