Travel on horseback through the Tien Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan, following old nomadic routes guided by local shepherds and staying in our private mobile camps in some of the country’s most remote landscapes.
We ride through wildflower-filled alpine pastures and walnut forests, over high mountain passes and canter along wide open foothills, on journeys researched and developed by Alexandra over more than twenty years in Kyrgyzstan.
Journeys
We offer only a handful of departures each year, travelling in small groups with a large local team supporting every journey. For those wishing to travel with their own family or friends, private departures can also be arranged.
The two routes offer very different riding.
Sary-Chelek, in the lower western Chatkal range of the Tien Shan, is considered the pearl of Kyrgyzstan for its extraordinary wildflowers and untouched landscapes. Our more mountainous route climbs and descends through dramatic country, past alpine lakes and stretches of ancient walnut forest.
At-Bashi is faster and more open, with long canters through rolling foothills and high plains beneath the 4,000-metre peaks that divide Kyrgyzstan from China. We ride among great herds and through villages untouched by tourism, where generations live together in cob houses and life still revolves around the land.
About
Alexandra Tolstoy has been travelling in Central Asia since 1999, when she crossed the region on horse and camel as part of a nine-month journey along the Silk Road. She has returned ever since, working closely with the same Kyrgyz horsemen and camp team over many years.
A fluent Russian speaker, she is an ambassador for the Kyrgyz Republic in the sphere of tourism.
